THE DESIGNERS Inspired by fabulous Danish design and with great affection for Danish design tradition, MARINOV wanted to create something for the Danes. LOCUS - a handmade tribute to Danish design. MARINOV attends to every detail on each lamp, from design, the development of technical solutions to the final construction and presentation. They met in Sofia, Bulgaria, but since the last day of school, Denmark has been their home, both in everyday life, design and craftsmanship. By the age of 10, Nikolay has learning to shape copper for jewellery and vessels at a historic workshop in his home town of Kazanlak. He continued as an apprentice in the working museum, and although he later trained as an electrical engineer and made a career for himself in the Danish wind turbine industry, the feel for the material is still there in his hands. Nikolay compliments the cooperation with his in-depth technical knowledge about light sources, circadian lighting and fine craftsmanship. He is also a lighting consultant in his own business, SimplyLight. Trained as a multimedia designer at Aaarhus University, Margarita is responsible for the marketing and visual presentation of MARINOV's products, as well as the graphic design/visualization of new ideas. Margarita's background as a classical dancer and choreographer contributes to the collaboration with style and sense of aesthetics. THE INSPIRATION MARINOV has gathered inspiration for the LOCUS lamp in both tradition, technology and innovation. From the simple and unpretentious Scandinavian intent on function. From technology and the desire to bring the latest knowledge of the properties of light into everyday life. From Scandinavian nature and the light and atmosphere of Copenhagen. Yes, even from exclusive Ferrari World - masculine architecture in Abu Dhabi. And, not least, from respect for the material itself - aluminium, copper formed by hand in accordance with historical methods and hand-stitched leather in the Danish tradition of saddle-making. The result is LOCUS. THE PROCESS 100% hand made in Denmark. Lampshades are molded on a manual press lathe and sanded or high gloss polished at a small factory on the outskirts of Copenhagen. On the inside, the shades are also sanded in order to preserve the natural metal look and at the same time achieve a silk effect - a soft reflective surface emitting a dim and soft light. The entire shade is subsequently coated with clear lacquer to preserve the original look. Leather straps and covers are sewn according to old saddelmaking traditions in a small workshop in the charming channel town of Sluseholmen in Copenhagen. The natural placement of the seams (with a weak or strong contrast in the thread) adds distinguishing detail at corners and joints. MARINOV acknowledges and cherishes quality craftsmanship and materials - in interaction with design and functionality.
